How do parents choose a school? We read 322 searches

Coimbatore school search runs in two grammars. Parents compare on board and shortlist while naming no school at all, then search you by name to check fees. Comparison demand is 45.1 times admission demand.

TL;DRThe short version

Coimbatore parents search in two grammars. Plural and unbranded first, comparing boards and shortlists: 23,430 searches a month across 178 queries. Singular and branded second, checking one school's fees. Comparison demand runs 45.1 times admission demand, and a school's own site holds 23 of 61 page-one slots.

Most schools believe parents find them by name. The search data says the opposite. Far more monthly search goes to queries naming no school at all, and by the time a parent types your name, the choosing is finished.

We pulled 322 Coimbatore school queries from Ahrefs on 11 September 2026 and read page one on the eight biggest. Everything here is Coimbatore. It is not a claim about India, and this sample could not support one.

What do Coimbatore parents actually type?

Two query shapes do nearly all the work, and they belong to different moments. Plural and unbranded is a parent who has not decided. Singular is a parent who has.

StageQuery shapeMonthly volumeQueriesAttached to a school name
Comparisonplural, unbranded23,430178not measurable, see limits

Feessingular3,320 or more94 or more2,730 of 3,320, 82.2%
Three Ahrefs keyword seeds, country IN, September 2026. Queries at monthly volume 10 or above, a floor we chose rather than an external standard. The 178 is after we removed 22 queries that turned out to be teacher job hunting, a filter we applied during collection and had not pre-registered. The fees row hit our own 100-row limit, so 94 is a floor and not a count.

The asymmetry is the finding. Admission demand is real but small, and 17 of 22 of those queries name a specific school. Parents do not search admission processes in the abstract. They search admission once the shortlist is down to one.

Which board do parents name most?

Inside the 178 comparison queries, the thing parents sort on is not price. It is the board. 101 of 178 queries name one somewhere in the phrase, 56.7%.

Board namedQueriesShare of the 178
CBSE66 of 17837.1%
Matriculation11 of 1786.2%
IGCSE or Cambridge8 of 1784.5%
ICSE or ISC7 of 1783.9%
IB5 of 1782.8%
State board4 of 1782.2%
178 parent-intent Coimbatore school queries, Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, country IN, September 2026. A board name counts wherever it appears in the phrase, so the rows overlap other query types and do not sum to 100%.

The second largest group is the shortlist. 75 of 178 queries lead with best, top, good or list, carrying 11,550 of 23,430 monthly searches, 49.3%. Half the comparison stage is a parent asking to be handed a ranked list, which is why the listicles win that search.

Who holds page one when a parent compares?

We read page one for the eight highest-volume unbranded queries. All eight returned results, which is exactly the minimum sample we had committed to accepting beforehand, so read the split as directional.

Who owns the resultPage-one organic resultsShare
A school's own website23 of 6137.7%
A directory, aggregator or listicle publisher23 of 6137.7%
Neither: forum, video, social, encyclopedia, government, document host15 of 6124.6%
61 page-one organic results across 8 Coimbatore school comparison queries, Ahrefs SERP index, September 2026. Domain classes assigned from a list fixed before counting.

"On these searches a parent can reach a scanned document host, a Reddit thread, a Wikipedia list or a district government page before reaching any school."

An AI Overview appeared on 3 of 8 of those queries, 37.5%. Across those three it carried nine sitelinks, and 5 of 9 pointed at a directory or listicle rather than a school. A local pack appeared on all eight, and so did a People Also Ask block.

Why does the local pack decide more than your homepage?

The map results sat above the organic results on all eight comparison queries. On the searches that matter most, your Business Profile is competing harder than your website. Google publishes what drives those placements:

"Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity."

Google Business Profile Help

Relevance and prominence are the two you can move, and Google's own steps are unglamorous:

  • 1

Verify the profile, so Google accepts you as the operator

  • 2

Complete the information: full address, hours, category, attributes

  • 3

Reply to reviews, since review count and rating feed prominence

  • 4

    Add photos and video

Distance you cannot change. That is the honest reason a nearer school sometimes outranks a better one, and no amount of website work fixes it.

When does your own name finally appear?

At the due-diligence stage, and then it dominates. Of 94 Coimbatore fee queries, 82 name a school, 87.2%. That 94 is a floor, because the seed hit our own row limit. The pattern is almost monotonous:

  • A school name plus fees structure
  • A school name plus fees structure pdf
  • A school name plus fees online payment
  • A school name plus admission, often with the academic year attached

Why the missing fee page costs you

If a parent searches your school plus fees structure and your site has no fee page, the search still resolves. It resolves to a directory, a scanned PDF on a document host, or an AI Overview built from whoever did publish. On one of the two fee queries we could read, the AI Overview pulled a fee structure from an aggregator page for a different city's branch of the same school group.

What should a school website actually publish?

The instinct here is to build a page per query. Resist it. Google's generative AI guidance says content spun up for every variation, mainly to move rankings, runs into its scaled content abuse policy, and states flatly that there is no ideal page length.

Left column from 322 Coimbatore queries, September 2026. Middle column is our read of the 30 Coimbatore school homepages we audited earlier and carries no new measurement.

The fee page is the cheapest win there and the one most often missing. A PDF is no substitute: harder to read on a phone, harder to keep current, and it competes with the aggregator copy of itself. We measured what else a homepage owes a parent separately.

What we could not measure

Four limits, stated plainly, because the numbers above are only useful if you know where they stop.

  • 1

Branded SERPs are thin in the index. Only 2 of 6 school-plus-fees queries returned page one from Ahrefs, while both bare school names returned fine. That is an index-coverage limit on low-volume long tail, not a finding about Google, and it is why no percentage appears here for who wins a branded fee search

  • 2

The comparison SERP sample is eight queries, sitting exactly on the minimum we agreed to accept before starting. It is not a stable industry figure

  • 3

Coimbatore only, September only. School search is seasonal, and the seasonal shape came from a separate study

  • 4

11% of the raw query set was not parents. 22 of 200 were teacher vacancies, principal jobs, driving schools, dance schools and MBA programmes. We removed them after seeing the data, so that filter was not pre-registered

On that third point, we published when Coimbatore school search actually peaks from a separate keyword study, and it runs counter-cyclically to the engineering admission season.

Key takeaways

  • Comparison search runs 45.1 times admission search in Coimbatore. Budget accordingly
  • The board is the sorting key: 101 of 178 comparison queries name one, 56.7%, and CBSE takes 66 of 178
  • Fees is 850 of 23,430 comparison volume, 3.6%, but 2,730 of 3,320 fee volume, 82.2%, is attached to a school name. Parents ask about price by name, later
  • Your own site holds 23 of 61 page-one organic slots on comparison queries, 37.7%. Directories hold the same 23
  • A local pack appeared on 8 of 8 comparison queries. Your Business Profile competes there whether or not you maintain it
  • Publish the fee page in HTML. It is the highest-intent search you receive and the one most schools answer with a PDF or nothing
  • Of the 69 comparison queries where Ahrefs returned a difficulty score, 58 of 69 sat at 10 or below, 84.1%. Ten is a line we drew on the Ahrefs 100-point scale, not an industry definition of easy, and the 109 queries with no score are excluded rather than assumed easy

Frequently asked

How do parents choose a school?

In Coimbatore they narrow before they name. 101 of 178 comparison queries name a board, 56.7%, and 75 of 178 ask for a best or top list, 42.1%. Only once a shortlist exists does a parent search a specific school, and then they ask about fees and admission.

Do parents search for school fees online?

Yes, but by name. Fee questions are 850 of 23,430 unbranded comparison volume, 3.6%. Within fee queries themselves, 2,730 of 3,320 monthly searches are attached to a specific school, 82.2%.

Which board do Coimbatore parents search for most?

CBSE, by a wide margin. It appears in 66 of 178 comparison queries, 37.1%, against matriculation at 11 of 178, IGCSE or Cambridge at 8 of 178, ICSE or ISC at 7 of 178, IB at 5 of 178 and state board at 4 of 178.

Why does my school not rank for best schools in Coimbatore?

Because the competition is publishers, not schools. Directory, aggregator and listicle sites hold 23 of 61 page-one organic results we counted, 37.7%, level with schools, and they outnumbered schools on 3 of 8 queries.

Does a school need a Google Business Profile?

A local pack appeared on 8 of 8 comparison queries we read. Google states local results rest on relevance, distance and popularity, and publishes how to establish business details: claim the profile, verify ownership in Search Console, add structured data.

Should we put our fee structure on the website?

The data says yes, and in HTML rather than as a PDF. 82 of 94 Coimbatore fee queries name a school, 87.2%, and 94 is a floor because the seed hit our row limit. If your page does not exist the search still resolves, to a directory or to an AI Overview assembled from someone else's copy.

Is this true for schools outside Coimbatore?

Unknown. Every figure here is Coimbatore, from a September 2026 snapshot. The query grammar is likely to travel. The volumes and the board mix almost certainly do not.
