A parent who already knows your name searches it, and Google mostly does not answer with your school. Across 28 Coimbatore schools read in September 2026, a knowledge panel appeared on 4 and a local pack on 9. In 8 of those 9 packs, the only business listed was the school itself.
A parent has already heard your name. Somebody at work mentioned it. They type it into Google at night, on a phone, with three other schools open in other tabs. That search is the last step before an enquiry, and almost nobody audits it.
What does a parent see when they search your school by name?
We searched 28 Coimbatore schools by their own name in September 2026 and recorded what Google put on the page besides the organic list. The result is mostly empty space. A named search rarely produces a map pack, a knowledge panel or an AI answer.
| What Google showed | Schools | Share |
|---|---|---|
| A local pack | 9 of 28 | 32.1% |
| A knowledge panel | 4 of 28 | 14.3% |
| An AI Overview | 2 of 28 | 7.1% |
- Page-one organic results belonging to somebody other than the school: 54 of 98, or 55.1%
- The school's own pages hold the other 44 of 98
Those are the same 28 queries behind our finding that 27 of 28 schools already hold the first organic slot for their own name. One population, two cuts of it, not two studies.
Why does Google list your school three times?
Of the 28 schools, 9 showed a local pack on their own name. We expected those packs to be crowded with rival schools. They were not.
In 8 of 9 packs, no business other than the searched school appeared at all, which is 88.9%. The ninth returned a same-name school outside Coimbatore plus two coaching academies, and we flag it as a name-selection artefact. The schools were competing with themselves.
- Entries across the 8 single-school packs: 22
- Mean separate listings of the same school per pack: 2.75
- Packs showing the school at least twice: 8 of 8
"There should only be one profile per business, as this can cause problems with how your information displays on Google Maps and Search."
That line comes from Google's guidelines for representing a business. The same document carries the exception that matters to a school.
What Google's departments rule actually requires
Departments inside a business, a university or an institution may hold their own Business Profile. That is not permission to split a school into as many listings as it has buildings.
"The exact name of each department must be different from that of the main business and that of other departments."
- Google adds that such departments typically have a separate customer entrance
- It also requires the category best representing each department to differ from the main business and from every other department
- A pre-primary wing with its own name, its own gate and its own category can hold its own profile
- A CBSE section and a matriculation section sharing one name and one category cannot
- A second listing created because nobody could log in to the first is a duplicate, not a department
What we did not check
Our 22 pack entries are campuses, board sections and units. We did not verify the name and category of each one, so treat this as a flag to check rather than a verdict.
We do this check as part of a free admission funnel audit.
Want this run on your own numbers? We audit your site, your ad accounts, and one competitor, and send back the three things we would fix first.
Why do only 4 of 28 schools have a knowledge panel?
A knowledge panel appeared on 4 of 28 branded searches and an AI Overview on 2. For the other 24, Google holds no compact, confident answer to the question of what this school is.
Google publishes how that panel is assembled, and the mechanism is inference rather than submission.
"Google algorithms find information, like your site's name, corporate contact information, and social profiles, that is publicly available on the web."
Inference needs something consistent to read. Google's guide to establishing business details names four inputs.
- A claimed Business Profile
- A verified Search Console property
- Organization structured data on the official site
- Corrections from a recognised representative
Our read is that a school with unclaimed listings, more than one domain and no Organization markup is asking an algorithm to guess. We did not test which of the 28 carried those problems, so treat this as a reason to check your own rather than a measured cause.
The one line of text you probably never wrote
Of the 30 school homepages we fetched, 26 exposed a head block. Twelve of those carried no meta description at all, and 4 of 26, or 15.4%, carried one that was present and unusable.
Unusable is our definition, not Google's. We counted a meta description as unusable on three conditions.
- The tag was empty
- The text exactly duplicated the page title
- The text was cut off mid-sentence
"There's no limit on how long a meta description can be, but the snippet is truncated in Google Search results as needed, typically to fit the device width."
That is Google's own documentation on snippets, worth reading before anyone sells you a character count. Our 140 to 155 character house rule is ours, useful for consistency, and not a Google requirement.
The same page says Google uses a meta description when it describes the page better than the page's own content. On a branded search, that line is often the first full sentence a parent reads about your school.
What should a school fix first?
None of this is a content problem. It is an identity problem, and the order matters because each step feeds the next.
- 1
Claim every Business Profile carrying your name, then close or merge the ones that are not real departments
- 2
Give each surviving profile a distinct name and a distinct primary category, or fold it into the main profile
- 3
Add Organization structured data to the official site, including the logo and the social profiles you actually run
- 4
Verify the site in Search Console so Google knows who operates it
- 5
Write a homepage meta description that reads like a sentence about your school
Step five is the cheapest and the one skipped most often, which matches the pattern in what a school homepage has to show a parent.
Before any of it, search your own name on a phone, logged out, and look at what a parent gets. The branded search is the shorter and later of the two grammars Coimbatore parents search in.
Key takeaways
- A knowledge panel appeared on 4 of 28 Coimbatore schools searched by their own name, and an AI Overview on 2 of 28
- A local pack appeared on 9 of 28, and in 8 of those 9 the only business listed was the school itself
- Those 8 packs held 22 entries between them, a mean of 2.75 listings of the same school
- Pooled across the 28 branded searches, 54 of 98 page-one organic results belonged to somebody else
- The fix is entity consolidation, claiming and merging profiles and adding Organization markup, not more content
Frequently asked
Does a school need a Google Business Profile if it already ranks first for its own name?
Ranking first and being understood are different things. The organic slot is nearly universal among the 28 schools we read, while a knowledge panel appeared on only 4 of them. The profile is what feeds the map pack and the panel.
Why does one school show several listings in the same map pack?
Usually because separate campuses, board sections or units were each given a profile. Across the 8 single-school packs we read, the mean was 2.75 listings and every pack showed at least two. Google treats them as separate businesses unless the names and categories say otherwise.
How does a school get a knowledge panel?
Google builds it by inference from public information, so there is no form to submit. Its business details guide names a claimed Business Profile, a verified Search Console property and Organization structured data as the inputs. A recognised representative can then correct what appears.
Should a school publish opening hours on its Business Profile?
Google's guidelines list schools and universities among the business types that should not provide hours, because their schedules vary by activity. Departments with their own profile carry their own hours. The main profile carries the main hours if it publishes any.
How long should a school's meta description be?
Google publishes no limit and says the snippet is truncated to fit the device width. Any specific character count you are given is somebody's house rule. Ours is 140 to 155 characters for consistency, and we label it as ours rather than as a Google requirement.
